Dave Gillmer – ‘I went left and Ronnie went right’

My Fail-to-Finish stories are as follows:

On my 2nd Umkomaas paddling with Ronnie Hermann and racing hard against my brother who was paddling with Tony Chinerry we elected to try and shoot 5 and 6. We swam on the approach.  I and the back of the boat went on the left side of the pinnacle, Ronnie and the nose of the boat went right of the pinnacle. The boat wrapped entirely round the pinnacle loaded with spare paddles, patch equipment etc and was never seen again.  We did the long walk on the left.

My second fail to finish was in 2000 I was scheduled to paddle with Mike Frizelle but was stabbed in my home on Valentine’s day and hospitalised with a haemothorax.   Ally Peter kindly took my seat the following weekend.

Otherwise I would have had my 30th !

Kind regards – David Gillmer

It's about life, marriage, raising kids, paddling rivers, travel in Africa . . . re-posting thoughts written over decades - at random, I'm afraid.
